Hemsedal is often called the “Scandinavian Alps” — and for good reason. Surrounded by jagged peaks and steep valleys, it delivers Norway’s most complete big-mountain experience, with long runs, serious freeride zones, and a fun-loving ski town vibe.
Why go to Hemsedal?
For a mix of alpine drama and laid-back Nordic energy. Hemsedal has reliable snow, impressive terrain, and one of Scandinavia’s best terrain parks. The compact village sits right below the lifts, making it easy to transition from first chair to night sessions or après without ever needing a car.
How will beginners get on?
Beginners are well looked after. The lower slopes feature wide, mellow runs and dedicated learning zones with conveyor lifts and friendly instructors. Once confidence builds, cruisy blues run from the top of Hollvin Express back to the base for a scenic long ride.
Pistes / Park / Powder
Hemsedal has 53 runs and 21 lifts covering three main peaks — Totten, Tinden, and Roni — offering 830 m of vertical drop. The snowpark is one of Scandinavia’s best, with progressive lines for all levels and a solid halfpipe setup. Freeriders love the sidecountry off Totten and the easily accessed powder stashes between the trees.
Beyond the slopes
Beyond the riding, Hemsedal keeps things active and authentic: ice climbing, snowshoe hikes, and dog sledding are all on the menu. If you’re after something slower, there’s a wellness spa at Skarsnuten Hotel and cozy cafés lining the main street.
How to get there?
Fly into Oslo Gardermoen Airport — from there it’s a scenic 3.5-hour drive or bus ride through the mountains. Hemsedal is also reachable from Bergen Airport in about 4.5 hours. Direct ski buses run from Oslo on weekends during winter.
Where to stay?
The Skarsnuten Hotel sits high above the valley with panoramic views and a ski-in/ski-out setup. Fyri Resort brings boutique style to the base area, while Hemsedal Alpin Lodge and Skistar Apartments suit groups and families looking for convenience and value.
Where to Eat
Mountain classics meet Nordic comfort food here. Try Kjøkken Kroken for fine dining, Fyri Liv Bistro for stylish après bites, or grab pizza at Peppes after a day in the park. On-mountain huts like Skigaarden serve hearty lunches and local beers mid-run.
Where to Apres?
Hemsedal has Norway’s liveliest après scene. Skistua gets things started slopeside in the afternoon before the crowd moves to Stavkroa, a legendary nightclub known for its DJ sets and roof-raising atmosphere. For a mellow vibe, Fyri Pool Club offers cocktails with hot tubs and mountain views.
