Varmin Film in memory of Alex Pashley

// features

In mid-March 2025, a small crew with Austin Smith, Mateo Massitti and Nik Baden chased a narrow weather window into the Alaskan backcountry. The trip came together because of Alex “Varmin” Pashley — the one watching the forecasts like a hawk, reading the signs, and calling the moment when everything finally aligned. For those few days, March 12 to 15, the mountains opened their doors.

The photos from this mission, including our magazine cover and full gallery, carry his fingerprint. Alex brought people together, lifted them up, and set the tone — light, warm, mischievous, full of life. The riding was special, but the energy he created was the real magic.

Shortly after returning home, Alex tragically passed away.

Varmin, the short film presented by The North Face is shot and edited by Brock Nielsen, stands as a tribute to his presence — to the laughter he sparked, the care he showed, and the way he helped others shine. It’s a celebration of a life lived fully and a spirit the snowboarding community will never forget.
