ALASKAN LINES

BY ALEX PASHLEY

Austin Smith, Nik Baden, and Mateo Massitti took a team trip to Alaska in March, with photographer and friend Alex Pashley, who captured the stills and the forever memories.

Alex Pashley, Jeff Keenan, and Jason Remple were caught in an avalanche on Monday, March 24, 2025, north of Kaslo, in British Columbia.

This photogallery, put together with the help of friends and fellow photographers Ben Gavelda and Aaron Blatt, and captioned by the riders themselves, is a small tribute to Alex.

Neither Nik or Mateo had been to Alaska before and I sounded like the old guy saying
“You guys, it’s not usually this good, you don’t know how good we are getting it” over and over again. What a trip!

First lap in Alaska. Adrenaline was hitting an all-time high, never been so present. I felt a lot of emotions being immersed in these mountains. Something took over in my body, it felt like a dance all the way down. At the bottom, fired up. Happy to be riding back to the crew after an epic ride. These were my favorite times, moments after getting on to something you were so nervous to ride.

I watch the weather in Alaska all winter long trying to predict and time the illusive perfect AK conditions. However, more often than not, we go there and get skunked. This was our first run and I knew we had found it, the rare AK perfection.

This was my first time getting dropped off on a “knife ridge”. I was shaking and couldn’t wait to get down. Austin was to my right, Mateo to my left and they both went and I was alone up there, unable to strap in due to fear. I sat down and was able to strap in, dropped in as quick as I could, did a couple turns, caught a little air, and scraped my way down to the bottom on less than ideal snow. Looking back, this was actually a fun experience but at the time I remember saying that was not chill at all.

The photo reads “dramatic” but in reality it was pretty chill, a little hop over
a bergschrund and some fluffy sluff cruising down behind me.

Let’s all wear the same gear all the time.

Thinking of how life throws you into some heavy situations, but doing it with
friends makes it all so much sweeter. Thankful for this crew.

Nik and Mateo built this jump while I built a different one.
We never hit the other one but they let me hit this one with them, what kind souls.

We got to this face as early as possible while the sun was still rising.
It was one of the better wake up calls I’ve got to experience myself.

Alaska is known for being the most difficult, most advanced terrain in snowboarding. But there is an abundance of blue squares of wide
open powder fields with the most unreal scenery. I love the blue square runs.

Here we go again. I think that’s where I want to go? The calm within the minutes, and seconds before I dropped in, were moments I’ll never forget. Unable to fully comprehend why or what was going on, it was special… And looking back, I may now know why.

This was fun and dreamy. Felt like riding a cloud while going at top speed with the best snow on the planet.
Blessings. I was so happy at the bottom of every run.

The most frequent question I get as a pro snowboarder is “What’s the best place to snowboard?”
The answer is in the background, Alaska. I’m a bit of an introvert, maybe that’s
why I love Alaska so much.

We’re all specs floating through space, if you find something you love, don’t take
it for granted and prioritize it above all.
